Jayasinghe was bestowed with the prestigious SLAAS Lifetime Research Award. This recognition marks the culmination of a remarkable career characterized by groundbreaking contributions to Natural Product Chemistry, an academic journey that has traversed the globe, leaving an indelible mark on the scientific community.

Academic Journey:

Prof. Lalith Jayasinghe’s academic journey commenced in 1985 when he graduated from the University of Peradeniya with a specialization in Chemistry. His pursuit of excellence led him to complete his Ph.D. in Natural Product Chemistry under the guidance of Prof. G.P. Wannigama in 1992. This pivotal period set the stage for a distinguished career marked by numerous accolades and international recognition.

Global Recognition:

Prof. Jayasinghe’s contributions to Natural Product Chemistry extended far beyond the shores of Sri Lanka. He ventured into renowned laboratories worldwide, including the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, University of Milan in Italy, Mississippi State University in the USA, and University of Hohenheim & University of Bremen in Germany. His international collaborations were not only significant but also earned him the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt award in 2000, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2022.

Research Milestones:

His prolific research career is underscored by an impressive body of work, comprising 110 research papers in journals, 01 edited book, 06 book chapters, 2 patents, 157 presentations at international symposia, and 147 presentations at national symposia. Noteworthy awards include the Kandiah Memorial Award, TWAS/NARESA Young Scientists Award, and the Dr. C.L. De Silva Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to the Chemistry of Sri Lanka.

Academic Leadership:

Prof. Jayasinghe’s commitment to academic leadership is evident through his role as the Acting Director of the NIFS for six months in 2016 and Acting Secretary for six months in 2022. He played a pivotal role in the Advanced Organic Chemistry course at PGIS, University of Peradeniya, since its inception in 2003. Additionally, he has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Peradeniya since 1998.

Global Collaborations:

His vision extended to fostering collaborations with research groups across the globe, establishing links with institutions in Japan, Germany, Pakistan, Italy, Malaysia, and China. These collaborations not only enriched his research but also contributed to the global standing of Sri Lankan scientific endeavors.

Awards and Recognition:

Prof. Jayasinghe’s accolades include the Presidential Awards for scientific publications for eight years, NRC Award in 2014, NSF-SUSRED awards in 2017 and 2020, and election as a Fellow of the National Academy of Science, Sri Lanka in 2012. Most recently, he was honored with the prestigious Presidential Initiative Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2024 for a collaborative research project.

As a Senior Research Professor at the Natural Product Project of the NIFS, Prof. Lalith Jayasinghe continues to be a driving force in the realm of Natural Product Chemistry. His remarkable journey is not just a testament to personal achievement but also to the potential of Sri Lankan scientists on the global stage. The SLAAS Lifetime Research Award is a fitting tribute to a scientist whose dedication and contributions have left an enduring legacy in the field of scientific inquiry.
