Meeting of BIMSTEC Expert Group on Technology Discusses Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation

The First Meeting of the BIMSTEC Expert Group on Technology (EGT) took place virtually on June 21, 2023, hosted by Sri Lanka. he event witnessed the participation of esteemed delegates from BIMSTEC member countries, focusing on various agenda items related to the advancement of technology in the region.

The meeting began with an address by Mahishini Colonne, Director at the BIMSTEC Secretariat, who welcomed all the delegates to the virtual meeting. She expressed gratitude to the Government of Sri Lanka for hosting the event and appreciated the participation of the delegates from all the BIMSTEC member states.

Following the established practice of BIMSTEC, Mr. M.N. Ranasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka, was elected as the Chairperson of the meeting. His role would involve conducting and overseeing the proceedings of the meeting.

The meeting focused on the current status of cooperation in science, technology, and innovation among BIMSTEC member states. The BIMSTEC Secretariat provided a briefing on the subject matter, highlighting the recommendations made during the 17th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting and the 5th BIMSTEC Summit regarding the establishment of an Expert Group on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Cooperation.

Delegations from each member state, presented their perspectives on the prospects for cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. Presentations were made by Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, showcasing their respective visions and initiatives in the field.

The meeting moved on to discuss and consider the draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for the BIMSTEC Expert Group on Science, Technology, and Innovation was approved and adopted.

The First Meeting of the BIMSTEC Expert Group on Technology successfully concluded with fruitful discussions on various aspects of cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. The meeting set the stage for enhanced collaboration among BIMSTEC member states and provided a platform for sharing ideas, knowledge, and best practices in the field. The outcomes of the meeting will contribute to the overall development and progress of the Bay of Bengal region.
