A Tree planting program to protect the river catchment areas around drinking water intakes

A tree planting program was organized by Center for Sustainability Solutions (CSS) and Aquatic club of Department of Zoology and Environmental Management of University of Kelaniya in collaboration with National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), Sabaragamuwa on 16th November 2017.

Around 1500 plants including Terminalia arjuna (kumbuk), Dipterocarpus zeylanicus (hora), Berrya cordifolia (halmilla), Pericopsis mooniana (nedun), Madhuca longifolia (mee) and Areca catechu (puwak) were successfully planted in the water catchment area of We Ganga adjacent to the main water intake of NWSDB, Kahawaththe  and the temple premises of Purana Rajamaha Viharaya, Kahawaththe.

Around eighty student volunteers representing Faculties of Science and Medicine, Mr. W.W. Liyanage, Deputy General Manager,  NWSDB, Sabaragauwa, staff members of NWSDB & twenty Samanera monks  of Purana Rajamaha Viharaya, Kahawaththe participated to the event. The Environment Committee of Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Science (SLAAS) provided 1500 plants.

Also, section B (Agriculture and Foresstry) of Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Science (SLAAS) supported the event to make it a success. This event was coordinated by Dr. Rangika Bandara, Senior Lecturer, Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya, President –Section B, SLAAS.
