What is Cancer?
Cancer is not a single disease but a group of conditions in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, invade nearby tissues, and may spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. These cells disrupt the body’s normal functions and, if left unchecked, can lead to severe illness or death.
Globally, cancer is a leading cause of death, responsible for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, according to the WHO, almost one in six deaths worldwide. The most commonly diagnosed cancers include breast, lung, colon, rectum, and prostate cancer, with lung cancer remaining the deadliest, claiming 1.8 million lives in 2020.
While lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, and physical inactivity contribute to cancer risk, environmental exposures and infections, including HPV, hepatitis B and C, and Helicobacter pylori, also play a role. Importantly, many cancers can be cured if detected early and treated effectively.
Current Methods of Prevention and Treatment
Prevention remains the first line of defense. Strategies include avoiding tobacco, moderating alcohol, maintaining physical activity, eating a balanced diet, and minimizing exposure to carcinogens. Vaccinations against HPV and hepatitis B are effective in preventing cervical and liver cancers.
When cancer develops, treatments generally involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or combinations of these approaches. In recent years, targeted therapies and immunotherapies have enabled more precise treatments that strengthen the body’s immune response and block cancer growth signals. However, conventional methods often cause significant side effects, highlighting the need for safer, more personalized options.
EnteroMix: A New Frontier in Cancer Vaccines
Russia’s National Medical Research Radiology Center, in collaboration with the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology, has developed a groundbreaking vaccine called EnteroMix. This new-generation cancer vaccinotherapy goes beyond traditional treatments.
EnteroMix uses a combination of four harmless viruses that directly target and destroy malignant cells while simultaneously activating the patient’s immune system. In addition to EnteroMix, Russian scientists are developing personalized mRNA cancer vaccines with the Gamaleya Institute. These vaccines are tailored to each patient by analyzing the genetic mutations of their tumor, creating a custom therapy that teaches the immune system to target specific cancer cells.
This dual-track approach, oncolytic viral vaccines and personalized mRNA vaccines, marks a paradigm shift in oncology, moving beyond one-size-fits-all treatments toward precision, safer, and more effective therapies.
