Training Workshop on DNA Sequencing

Kandy Chapter of the Sri Lankan Society for Microbiology is organizing a training work shop on DNA sequencing of bacteria and viruses, to enable early carrier researchers/post graduate students to analyze their DNA sequencing data themselves.

WORKSHOP CONTENT:

Introduction to DNA sequencing

• Brief overview of DNA and gene structure

Practical Session I

• PCR – amplifying the fragment that will subsequently be sequenced

• Purification of PCR products
• Assessing the purified PCR products

Practical Session II

• Detailed analysis of sequences

• Sequencing errors and base qualities
• Sequence analysis using different tools
• BLAST services

Practical session III    

• Multi Locus Sequence Typing (MLST)
• e-Burst

Practical Session IV

• Alignments of sequences
• Phylogenetic trees
• Protein sequence and structure
