Japanese Government(Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarships for 2019 – Undergraduate Students

Japan Scholaships

Applications are invited from eligible applicants for the award of undergraduate scholarships offered by the Japanese Government for the year 2019 under the above scholarship scheme.

(01) General Eligibility requirements:-

(a) Should be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
(b) Should have passed the G.C.E. (A/L) examination in Mathematics stream conducted by the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka.
(c) Basic knowledge of Japanese Language
(d) Should possess a good knowledge of English.
(e) Should not be a student registered or following a course at a university, selected by the UGC based on the G.C.E. A/L examination results.

(02) Fields of Study:

Natural Sciences-A
 Science (1.Mathematics, 2.Physics, 3.Chemistry )
 Electric & Electronic Studies(4.Electronics, 5.Electrical Engineering, 6.Information Engineering)
 Mechanical Studies(7.Mechanical Engineering, 8.Naval Architecture)
 Civil Engineering & Architecture (9.Civil Engineering, 10.Architecture, 11.Environmental Engineering )
 Chemical Studies (12.Applied Chemistry, 13.Chemical Engineering, 14.Industrial Chemistry ,15.Textile Engineering)
 Other fields (16.Metallurgical Engineering ,17.Mining Engineering , 18.Maritime Engineering , 19.Biotechnology)

(03) Other Conditions:

a) Applicant must be willing to learn the Japanese language in one year period and receive University education in Japanese.
b) Candidate: should be born between April 2nd, 1994 and April 1st, 2002.

c) Applicant will be ineligible if he/she

 is a service member or a civilian employee registered on the active military list.
 is a previous recipient of a Japanese government scholarship.
 is currently enrolled in a Japanese university with the resident status of “college student”, or will be enrolled in a Japanese University as an other source or self financed international student between the time of application for this scholarship in his/her country and the time the scholarship period is due to begin.

(04) Terms of Award:

Grantee will be provided,
a) 117, 000 yen per month .A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 or 3, 000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount for the grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions.
b) Economy class air ticket.
c) Fees for entrance examinations, matriculation and tuition fee.

Notes:
 Scholars are required to bring approximately US $ 2000 to cover immediate needs just after arrival in Japan.
 The scholarship will not be paid to a grantee who takes leave of absence or is long absent from the assigned University or the preparatory Japanese -teaching institution.

(05) Nominations & Final Selections:

a) Applicants have to sit for the academic examination of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and Japanese.
b) Nominations will be made through an interview conducted by the Japanese Embassy in Colombo after short listing of applicants on the basis of their results of the above test.
c) These nominations will be sent to the selection authority in Japan through the Japanese Embassy in Colombo.
d) The final selections will be made by the Government of Japan accordingly. Therefore no candidate should treat his/her nomination for a scholarship as an acceptance for an award Acceptance is a matter entirely within the discretion of the awarding agency

(06) Special Notes :

a) Conditions laid down in this notification may vary as per the criteria imposed by the awarding country without prior notice
b) If any student declines the offer after the selection through the interview, he/she will not be considered for any of the scholarships during the year.
c) Candidates who are awarded a scholarship for undergraduate studies would not be considered for admission to any local university.
d) Candidates after the receipt of placements cannot decline the scholarship except under a situation that the Higher Educational Institute concerned is not recognized by the University Grants Commission.
e) Extension of the period of the scholarship will not be recommended by this ministry.
f) Field of study selected at the beginning will not be allowed to change later under any circumstances.

h) Applicants can apply for one scheme only (Either Undergraduate or College of Technology)

(07) Applications:

a) Every application should conform to the specimen form provided.
b) The words “Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Undergraduate Scholarships – 2019” should be hand or type-written on top left corner of the envelope containing the application.
c) The choice of subjects/ field of study should be indicated in descending order in the space provided for in the application.
d) G.C.E (A/L) results should be indicated in the application according the number of attempts made, separately.
e) Candidates are required to indicate Z score gained by them at the G.C.E (A/L) Examination and the grading for each subject in the relevant place of the application.
f) If the address of the candidate would be changed after the submission of the application, changes should be intimated in writing including the Z score as well.
g) Closing Date: Applications will be accepted only up 23.05.2018.
h) Applications, which are not sent according to the above requirements, incomplete in any respect or received late, will be rejected.
i) Applications should be sent to the following address by registered post or by hand to reach on or before the closing date.
