Astrobiology Research Conference 2015 – Peradeniya, Kandy
August 21, 2015 - August 23, 2015
From the 2001 occurrence of Red Rain in Sri Lanka to the 2012 meteorite falls in the Polonnaruwa district some areas of astrobiology research has naturally been focused on this island. Moreover, University of Ceylon Alumnus Vidya Jyothi Prof. Chandra Wickramasinghe being one of the pioneers of this subject, particularly in relation to panspermia, we consider an interdisciplinary conference to be a timely venture. Recent research in many diverse areas of science from microbiology, studies of comets and cometary dust in the stratosphere to the search for habitable extrasolar planets all point to the relevance of such a conference.
The University of Peradeniya recognizing the relevance and importance of this field announces the 1st International Conference on Astrobiology to be held in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This conference will provide a timely forum for scientists not only from south Asia, but from around the world who work in the interdisciplinary field of astrobiology — the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe — to convene and report on research findings and plan future endeavours.
