Sri Lankan Ocean Girl Dr.Asha Honored with an Expedition Ship Deck in Her Name

Dr. Asha de Vos, the world famous Sri Lankan Marine Biologist and Ocean Educator now has an expedition ship deck in her name. Aurora Expeditions, one of the world’s leading expedition cruise operators last week announced the latest addition to their fleet “Sylvia Earle”. Celebrating the world ocean day the company announced that they are honoring worlds leading female conservationists by naming the decks of the new vessel under their names. Dr. Asha share a deck named after herself with Hanli Prinsloo, a Freediver and Ocean Conservationist.

The Tainted Western Coast in the Aftermath of X-press Pearl

The fire break-out in the X-press pearl feeder vessel is now becoming the worst known disaster on Sri Lankan waters in recent history. At the time of the incident, the X-press Pearl has stationed approximately 9.5 nautical miles ahead of the port of Colombo, shipping 1486 containers with 25 tonnes of nitric acid, cosmetics, and several other hazardous chemicals onboard.

Sri Lanka Ranked 109th in Environmental Performance Index 2020

On June 4th 2020 researchers from Yale and Columbia universities released the Environmental Performance Index for the year 2020. The index rank 180 countries on 32 performance indicators across 11 issue categories covering environmental health and ecosystem vitality and considered as the premier metrics framework for global environmental policy analysis. According to the data published Sri Lanka is ranked 109th out of 180 countries in the EPI 2020. Overall EPI score for Sri Lanka is 39 out of 100 which shows how bad our performances were in environmental health and ecosystem vitality issues.
