Sri Lanka to Control Asbestos Imports: Minister of Environment

Sri Lanka is taking necessary steps to cut-down imports of Asbestos due to health issues caused by Asbestos related products and due to difficulties faced by the local roofing products manufacturers, says Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera. Minister talked about these plans in a recent press briefing held at the Ministry of Environment. According to Minister Amaraweera Asbestos has now become an environmental problem as well because there is no proper safe system to dispose Asbestos products in Sri Lanka.

Xpress Pearl Disaster and its’ Impact on Coastal and Marine Environments; View of an Exert

As a country Sri Lanka is facing one of the worst environmental disasters with the MV Express Perl ship accident. Mitigating various problems that has arisen as a result of this disaster is no easy task as we first have to get the actual picture of the extent of damage caused by this incident to the marine environment and living organisms in these affected areas. We can find answers only after looking at the actual situation. So, even though we like it or not we will have to be patient and wait for some time to understand the real situation. Expert Group to Study and Asses the Impact of Express Pearl Disaster

Sri Lankan authorities have established a mega scale expert group to investigate, study and asses the impact from the recent Express Pearl maritime disaster. The Tainted Western Coast in the Aftermath of X-press Pearl

The fire break-out in the X-press pearl feeder vessel is now becoming the worst known disaster on Sri Lankan waters in recent history. At the time of the incident, the X-press Pearl has stationed approximately 9.5 nautical miles ahead of the port of Colombo, shipping 1486 containers with 25 tonnes of nitric acid, cosmetics, and several other hazardous chemicals onboard.
