Sri Lanka Launches National Initiative for Research and Development Commercialization: A Milestone for Innovation

In a groundbreaking move to foster innovation and elevate the country’s economy through science and technology, the Sri Lankan government has launched the National Initiative for Research and Development Commercialization (NIRDC). The event, held at the Presidential Secretariat, was graced by the President of Sri Lanka, marking a significant step towards the nation’s commitment to integrating science and technology into its economic and social development.

The President, in his speech, emphasized that Sri Lanka can secure its place in the global market through innovative production initiatives and the commercialization of research. He highlighted that the country’s abundant natural resources, coupled with emerging local innovators, could be harnessed to create new market opportunities and elevate Sri Lanka as a hub of global innovation.

“A well-planned, long-term R&D framework has already been initiated under the newly established Ministry of Science and Technology,” the President noted. The new initiative also introduced a dedicated platform, nirdc.gov.lk, designed to streamline the process of transforming research outcomes into marketable products and services. Individuals with completed or nearly completed research can now apply for support via this platform to commercialize their ideas.

With the establishment of a committee co-chaired by Dr. Nandaka Kumaranayake, Presidential Secretary, and Prof. Gomika Udugamasuriya, Senior Presidential Advisor on Science and Technology, this initiative brings together experts from various domains such as economics, law, arts, and cultural heritage. The committee’s mandate is to oversee the swift commercialization of R&D outcomes, ensuring that innovative ideas are transformed into tangible, market-ready solutions that will contribute to national growth.

In his address, the President also pointed out the need to address rural poverty by empowering communities with access to economic activities and information rights. Through innovation, the country’s rural areas can benefit from new opportunities, further contributing to the overall social development of Sri Lanka.

The launch of the National Initiative for R&D Commercialization is seen as a crucial step toward transforming Sri Lanka’s traditional industries, such as tea, coconut, and rubber, into modern, technology-driven sectors. The initiative aims to quickly commercialize R&D projects already in progress, rapidly turning them into value-added products and services that can boost the economy.

During the event, Dilip Fernando, Managing Editor and Founder of The Sri Lankan Scientist Magazine, attended the ceremony in recognition of the magazine’s tireless efforts in popularizing science and fostering science communication in Sri Lanka. This significant occasion allowed The Sri Lankan Scientist Magazine to engage with key stakeholders, including local and international investors, research institutions, and industry experts.

Several institutes expressed interest in collaborating with the magazine to enhance science communication efforts across the country. Such partnerships will further strengthen the magazine’s role in bridging the gap between scientific research and the public, fostering a more innovative and scientifically informed society.

The launch of NIRDC signals a new era for Sri Lanka, where science and technology will drive economic growth, poverty alleviation, and social progress. As the initiative gathers momentum, it is expected to open up new opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators, positioning Sri Lanka as a key player in the global innovation landscape.
