SUMMARY:BIOINFORMATICS WORKSHOP "Eukaryotic Pathogen Database Usage"
DESCRIPTION:This is a distance learning\, non-residential workshop conducted by Eukaryotic Pathogen Database (EuPathDB) staff and leading scientists in the world together with local instructors. The lectures will be conducted and online training will be provided by international experts using virtual presentation software. \nEuPathDB (EuPathDB.org)\, an NIH/NIAID-supported Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) based in the United States of America provides the global scientific community with access to genomic-scale datasets related to key eukaryotic pathogens (Fungi\, Plasmodium\, Cryptosporidium\, Giardia\, Leishmania\, etc.). In addition to genome sequences\, this resource houses a variety of functional genomics data (RNA sequence\, polymorphism data\, proteomics\, metabolic pathways etc.)\, allowing researchers to identify and prioritize targets for further experimental analysis in the lab. \nThis course is being organized and hosted by the Faculty of Medical Sciences\, University of Sri Jayewardenepura\, Sri Lanka. \n  \n\n\n\nHOW TO APPLY\n\n\nPrerequisites\nPostgraduate students/Supervisors/Consultants/Research officers/Scientists in Biological disciplines (Biological Sciences\, Molecular Biology\, Medicine and Dentistry etc.) with relevant research/diagnostic interests are encouraged. \nApplications\nAvailable here \nDeadline for application: 05th of August 2015\nSelections will be notified to the applicants on or before the 08th of August 2015 \nRegistration fee\nSince there are limited places (20)\, registration is a prerequisite before the workshop by the selected participants on or before the deadline (15th of August 2015). Method of payment will be notified to the selected applicants by e-mail. Registration fees are subsidized to all categories. Since this is an intensive course\, it is also important that participant be present in all days and be punctual.\nDeadline for registration : Before 15th of August 2015

SUMMARY:Astrobiology Research Conference 2015 - Peradeniya\, Kandy
DESCRIPTION:From the 2001 occurrence of Red Rain in Sri Lanka to the 2012 meteorite falls in the Polonnaruwa district some areas of astrobiology research has naturally been focused on this island. Moreover\, University of Ceylon Alumnus Vidya Jyothi Prof. Chandra Wickramasinghe being one of the pioneers of this subject\, particularly in relation to panspermia\, we consider an interdisciplinary conference to be a timely venture. Recent research in many diverse areas of science from microbiology\, studies of comets and cometary dust in the stratosphere to the search for habitable extrasolar planets all point to the relevance of such a conference. \nThe University of Peradeniya recognizing the relevance and importance of this field announces the 1st International Conference on Astrobiology to be held in Kandy\, Sri Lanka. This conference will provide a timely forum for scientists not only from south Asia\, but from around the world who work in the interdisciplinary field of astrobiology — the study of the origin\, evolution\, distribution\, and future of life in the universe — to convene and report on research findings and plan future endeavours. \nConference Chair \n  \n \nProf. Chandra Wickramasinghe \nDirector of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology University of Buckingham\, UK \nAffiliated Visiting Professor\, University of Peradeniya \, Sri Lanka \n  \n  \nKey Dates \n30th June –  Abstract Submission Deadline \n10th July  – Author Notification \n31st July  – Author registration & final paper deadline \n21st August   – Conference Begins

SUMMARY:First International Conference on Natural Products Genomics and Drug Discovery
DESCRIPTION:First International Conference on Natural Products Genomics and Drug Discovery\n“Herbal Products and Nutraceuticals in the\nPrevention and Treatment of Disease”\n22 – 24 July 2015\, Galadari Hotel\, Colombo\, Sri Lanka \n\nThe focus of this conference is to increase awareness on the many ways that natural products have impacted modern medicine and discuss their potential contribution to future drug discovery around the world.\n \nThematic areas of the conference are: \n\n\n\n\nNatural Products\nFood as Medicine in Prevention and Treatment of Diseases\nNatural Products Genomics\nDrug Discovery\n\n\n\n\nIt is said that if mother-nature gives us the disease\, mother-nature also provides the cure to these diseases. By the 19th century\, the source of all drugs sold in drug stores in Europe and North America was natural products. These drug stores eventually developed into larger pharmaceutical companies. According to some estimates\, as much as 80% of the drugs used even today\, have their roots in natural products. Examples include statins for heart\, metformin for diabetes\, steroids for inflammation\, asprin for pain and chemotherapeutic agents such as paclitaxel\, camptothecin\, vinblastin\, vincristine\, thalidomide. In fact\, of the 121 prescription drugs in use today for cancer treatment\, 90 are derived from plants. \nA rich assortment of medicinal plants has been the foundation of Sri Lanka’s indigenous ayurvedic system of healing. The word “Ayurveda” comes from Sanskrit meaning “knowledge about life” or knowledge which shows us how to maintain good health and how to cure illnesses. Many of the ancient kings have dedicated their services to the development of ayurveda medicine in Sri Lanka such as King Pandukabhaya (4th Century BC)\, King Buddhadasa (362-409 AD)\, King Datusena (460-478 AD) (Mahavamsa and Chulavamsa). Therefore Sri Lanka\, known also for its natural beauty\, becomes a leading choice as venue to host a conference focusing on natural products. The focus of this conference is not only to discuss the different ways natural products have impacted modern medicine\, but also to discuss the potentially many ways they can contribute towards future drug discovery around the world.\n \n \nThis conference is organized by the International Society for Natural Products Genomics and Drug Discovery.\n

SUMMARY:EUROPEAN BIOTECHNOLOGY CONGRESS 2015
DESCRIPTION:Romania\, the twelfth largest country in Europe is located at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe\, bordering on the Black Sea. The name “Romania”\, which was first used when the three regions of the country- Walachia\, Moldavia and Transylvania- were united in 1850\, reflects the influence of ancient Rome on the nation’s language and culture. \nBucharest\, also named Dâmboviţa Citadel during the 14th and 15th centuries\, is the capital municipality\, cultural\, industrial and financial centre of Romania. It was first mentioned in documents in 1459\, became the capital of Romania in 1862 and is the centre of Romanian media\, culture and art. In the period between the two World Wars\, the city’s elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the nickname of „Little Paris”. \nThe University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest is one of the oldest  education institutions in Romania.
